1st lecture on 1st year physics

PHYSICS
Definition:
The branch of science which deals with the matter, energy and their relationship. Physics explains the natural phenomenon with the help of fundamental law and principals.

Some important branches of physics are the following:
1-      Nuclear Physics
The branch of physics which deals with atomic nuclei. Nuclear physics is related to nucleons (neutrons and protons which form the nuclei of atoms), their structure, energy state, reaction between nuclei and radioactivity for example nuclear fission, nuclear fusion and nuclear forces.
2-      Particle Physics
The important branch of physics which is concerned with the ultimate particles of which the matter is composed. Particle physics is related with understanding the properties and behavior of elementary particles.
3-      Solid State Physics
It is the branch of physics which is concerned with the structure and properties of solids and the phenomenon associated with solids. These phenomena are electrical conductivity, semiconductor and super conductivity etc.
It can also be said as the study of solids on the basis of crystal structure and is concerned with properties of crystalline materials.
4-      Relativistic Mechanics
It is the branch of physics which deals with velocities approaching the velocity of light. It is concerned with the elementary particles related to the special theory of relativity and describes the motion of particles having velocities close to the speed of light i.e 3x108 ms-1

New Branches of Physics

Physics can be said as mother of all sciences. Physics is most fundamental of all sciences and provides basic principles for other branches of physics. This overlapping of physics with other fields gave birth the new branches of physics such as Physical chemistry, Biophysics, Astrophysics, Health physics etc.

ROLE OF PHYSICS IN TECHNOLOGY

Physics has also played an important role in the development of technology and engineering sciences. Technology has created a revolution in the outlook of mankind. Means of communications and information media have brought all the parts of the world close to one another. Any Event occurs in one part of the world immediately spread round the globe.
